Two piece badge meas. approx. 2.75 inches long. Round disc at top with red, white and blue lettering which reads “POST No.5 GAR, Lynn, Mass.” From this is suspended a small woman’s shoe.
Post #5 was named in honor of General Frederick W. Lander of Massachusetts. Lander was born in Salem in 1821. He was educated at Norwich Military Academy and took up civil engineering as an Army officer. When the Civil War broke out Lander worked on the staff of General McClellan. He was made a Brigadier General of Volunteers on May 17, 1861 and served on the staff of General Thomas A. Morris at Philippi and Rich Mountain. He was given a Brigade in Stones Division of the Army of the Potomac. He was later given command of the District of Harper’s Ferry and Cumberland , Maryland. He was involved in the Battle of Balls Bluff where he was wounded in the leg. He fell ill and died in Paw Paw, Virginia on March 2, 1862.
