A singular chance to collect a set of Grand Army of the Republic medals, ribbons, and event badges tied to 143rd PA, Company D, including some genuine rarities.
The centerpiece of the collection is a souvenir medal and ribbon from the April 27, 1897 dedication of Grant’s Tomb in New York City. This exceedingly rare item is attached to 143rd Pennsylvania veteran banner medal, tying this veteran to one of the most momentous memorial events in post-Civil War memory. The engraved regimental and company designation identification medal is a beautiful silver finished metal with hand painted black lettering.
The collection also includes several more unique pieces including:
A Memorial Coin from the 1890 dedication of the President Garfield memorial in Cleveland, OH.
A Visitor Medal from the 1930 National Encampment of Spanish American War Veterans. The section above the ribbon intended to hold a small name card is empty.
An exceptionally scarce 1913 John Logan GAR Post Number 102 Souvenir Badge/Pin from Camden, NJ.
A pin and ribbon from the May 31, 1909 Montour County Soldiers and Sailors Monument dedication in Danville, PA.
A representative Medal from the 52nd Annual Encampment of the Department of Pennsylvania, held in Danville, PA in June of 1918.
This veteran of the 143rd Pennsylvania Company D was obviously quite active in his post-service years and may have seen action in any or all of the major actions of the eastern theater of the Civil War including Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Bristoe, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Totopotomoy Creek, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Globe Tavern, Boydton Plank Road, Hatcher’s Run, and the overall Siege of Petersburg before ending the war guarding New York Harbor as members of the Department of the East.
Groupings like these are extremely scarce and would make a very nice addition to any Civil War, GAR, or US veteran item collection. Collection is displayed in the included pinned black riker box with glass front. [cm][ph:L]
