Wooden cane meas. approx. 35.25 inches long. The top 6.00 inches of the cane is round with the next 11.00 inches being four sided before returning to a round configuration at bottom. Faintly painted in gold on the four sides are “G.A.R.” / “POST” / “N.O. 54” / O. P. MORTON.” Just above the lettering is a large iron tack that once held a reunion ribbon. Remains of red and white cloth can be seen below the tack.

Research shows that the O. P. Morton Post #54 was named after Quincey P. Morton of Company F, 8th Michigan Cavalry who was captured at Dandridge, Tennessee on January 20, 1863 and died as a POW at Richmond on February 23, 1864. The letter “O” in the Post name is used in error and should be a “Q.” The Post was organized April 15, 1882 and was disbanded in 1924.

The cane is in overall good condition with light surface scratches to its dark brown finish. There are no major chips or cracks. [ad] [ph:L]
