EXCELLENT TYPE-V GAR MEMBERSHIP BADGE

$125.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 286-1032

The membership badge for the Union veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic went through a number of changes, some of them rather subtle, but of interest to the collector. This Type-V is the culmination of those changes in 1886, with die for the medal recut again to include the badges of Sheridan’s and Wilson’s Cavalry Corps and Hancock’s First Veteran Corps and bears an 1886 patent date on the reverse of the top bar along with an army mess kettle hanging over a camp fire in raised relief.

The badge is in excellent condition with bright color to pin, medal and the flag ribbon. This pattern came in while membership in the G.A.R. was still rising, reaching its peak in 1890 with 409,489 members. This would make a nice addition to a display of veterans’ memorabilia. If your ancestor served in the Union army and joined the G.A.R., he likely had one of these.  [sr] [ph:L]
