Item Code: 172-5766

Two white silk reunion ribbons for a veteran of the 75th Ohio. Both are in escellent condition, on a maroon mat in a modern frame, and have text and graphics in black. The left ribbon shows an Ohio “buckeye,” a branch with leaves and nut of the state tree, with “Ohio” in capital letters underneath. The second ribbon is specifically for the 75th Ohio and lists twenty-one battle honors. The regiment served from November 1861 to January 1865, losing 4 officers and 110 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded. They started off serving in West Virginia, before joining Pope’s Army of Virginia, where they took heavy casualties at 2nd Bull Run, and then moving into the 11th Corps Army of the Potomac from September 1862 to August 1863, where they were hard hit also at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, finally transferring to the Department of the South in August 1863, and seeing action in South Carolina and Florida, where they served as mounted infantry.

A typewritten note attached to the back of the frame refers to, “The Great Reunion of the Veteran Soldiers and Sailors of Ohio,” held at Newark in July 1878. We presume these ribbons were souvenirs of that reunion, sponsored by the “Society of Soldiers and Sailors of Licking County, Ohio.”   [MK] [ph:L]
