The top bar of this piece has a disc at center illustrated with the seal of the GAR which shows a soldier and a sailor shaking hands in front of the figure of Columbia. This is flanked by “JUNE 1919” with “LANCASTER” in an arced riband across the top.
Suspended from the top bar is a solid red ribbon that meas. approx. 1.00 inch long x 1.25 inches wide. Both edges are slightly frayed.
Attached to the ribbon is a bar that reads “REPRESENTATIVE.” Suspended from this bar is a drop with the bust of a veteran at center surrounded by “COMMANDER J. D. HICKS.” The reverse of the drop has “53RD ANNUAL ENCAMPMENT DEPT. OF PENNA. G.A.R. LANCASTER JUNE 1919.” This inscription is at center of a laurel wreath.
Josiah D. Hicks enlisted as a Private in Company K, 125th Pennsylvania on August 14, 1862 and saw action at 2nd Bull Run, Antietam and Chancellorsville. He was mustered out May 18, 1863. He next served in the 46th Pennsylvania as a Sergeant from July 1st to August 19, 1863. He also had service as a 1st Lieutenant in the Pennsylvania Militia.
