The top bar of this medal has a spread-winged eagle at center flanked by seven stars on the left and six on the right. The reverse of the bar still has the original pin.
A solid black ribbon that meas. approx. 1.50 inches long x 1.25 inches wide is suspended from the top bar. Attached to this ribbon is a circular drop.
The obverse has the bust of a Union soldier at center. With “DULCE ET DECORUM EST PRO PATRIA MORI” (IT IS SWEET AND GLORIOUS TO DIE FOR ONE’S COUNTRY) across the top. Around the bust of the soldier is “COL. LORIN ANDREWS OF KNOX COUNTY, OHIO’S FIRST VOLUNTEER SOLDIER.”
Reverse has monument at center surrounded by “32ND ANNUAL ENCAMPMENT DEPT. OF OHIO GAR. MT. VERNON, OHIO – JUNE 14-16 1898.”
Lorin Andrews was commissioned Colonel of the 4th Ohio Infantry on June 5, 1861 and died on July 18, 1861.
