This black ribbon meas. approx. 2.25 inches wide x 7.00 inches long. The top bar has a brass frame with a gold celluloid center with a full color GAR membership badge printed at center flanked by the words “GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC.”
Suspended from this bar is the main black ribbon mentioned above and a short white ribbon that meas. approx. 2.00 x 4.00 inches. Over this is a third ribbon of red, white and blue gathered at the bottom. Suspended from this short ribbon is a celluloid button with a full color scene of charging Union soldiers passing a cannon. The bottom of the black ribbon has strong silver lettering that reads “CAPT. PHILLIP G. BIER POST NO. 17 DEPT. OF W.VA.” The bottom edge of the ribbon has a cloth silver binding with a row of silver bullion tassels.
This badge is in excellent condition and still retains the original pin on the reverse.
Post No. 17 was named for Captain Phillip G. Bier was in the 12 West Virginia but in 1864 he was assigned to the Adjutant General’s Department. He was killed in action on October 19, 1864 at Cedar Creek, Va.
