The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 7 ¾” in diameter and is the “bullseye” style with concentric rings. It was “done up” well by a veteran at some point.

Some exposed metal parts show evidence of gold paint and a home-made, embroidered cover was added. One side was covered with velvet, of which, much of the knap has worn off. Sewn diagonally onto the velvet is a 2.5” wide stripe with initials and small flowers embroidered. Whatever this material is, it has become thread-bare and separated. The opposite side of the canteen was covered in the same weak material and shows the same type of separation of the cloth with much more wear and deterioration. There are remnants of two hand painted dates on this side, likely the dates of the soldier’s service: “August 20th [186]4” over “June 5th [186]5”.  The various parts of the cloth cover were sewn together with a very decorative broad “X” stitch.

The three sling loops and spout are present as is a cork stopper and its chain. The pewter spout is stamped “BOOTH, PHILA.”

This is a nice example of a Civil War veteran’s “reunion” canteen.  [sr] [ph:L]
