This badge has a foliate bordered pinback top bar with a light blue ribbon- perhaps a bluish-gray originally- with the “DALLAS / 1902” stamped in gold near the top, from which is suspended a gilt brass star with raised border surrounded by a wreath and bearing at upper center an impressed Confederate battleflag painted in red and blue in recesses for the field and cross, with raised gilt brass stars. The star is certainly emblematic of Texas and has some sun rays coming down from the top point toward the flag, which has “UNITED / CONFEDERATE VETERANS” in large letters over it and “REUNION / APRIL / 22-25” underneath. The upper bar is missing the pin. The solder for it is still there. The ribbon has some soiling and wear, and was worn through by the suspension slot, without much fabric missing and affecting just the very tops of the gold letters. The back is plain with the maker’s mark in small raised letters “Schwaab S & S Co. / Milwaukee.” (The Schwaab Stamp and Stationery Co.) The upper bar shows mostly bronze from wear on the raised portions. The lower medal shows more gilt finish, with a few small chips to the painted areas of the flag. The badge as a whole, however, still displays well.
Newspapers gave the reunion a lot of coverage with headlines blaring, “HEROES OF THE ‘SIXTIES’” and “DALLAS CONGESTED WITH HUMANITY.” At least 12,000 veterans reportedly attended this reunion, including veterans from Indian Territory, with Stephen D. Lee and John B. Gordon among the featured speakers, and general attendance reaching 125,000. This badge came to us with some reunion badges from Terry’s Texas Rangers, the 8th Texas Cavalry. It is possible the original owner was a veteran of that organization. [sr] [ph:m/L]
