These scarce, attractive badges consist of crossed sabers as the top pinback bar, with a light-blue and white striped ribbon suspending a smaller pair of crossed cannons holding suspension rings from which hangs the gold and red enamel cross of six arms bearing the corps insignia of the First, Second, Third, Fifth, Sixth, and Ninth Army Corps, with the center of the cross bearing and conjoined AP and the insignia of the Eleventh and Twelfth Corps. The reverse is engraved with the member’s number, 687, but there is no complete registry and we are unable to name the recipient.
The organization was limited to members of the Army of the Potomac, in the same way there was a Society of the Army of the Cumberland, etc., and held it first reunion in New York in 1869. In 1899 its membership was 1,800, considerable but still small by comparison with many veterans’ groups. One source says it had dropped to just 350 by 1906. It held its last reunion in 1927. Needless to say, the badges are scarce. Some early ones were made by Bailey, Banks and Biddle of Philadelphia. This one is jeweler made, but we see no maker’ mark. Given the membership numbers, it must be fairly early. In any case, it is very scarce, very appealing, and in very good condition. [ad] [ph:L]
