Two-piece bronze medal consisting of a rectangular bar and circular drop.
The bar is embossed with “MASSACHUSETTS MINUTE MEN OF 1861” Reverse has the original pin.
Circular drop has the Seal of the State of Massachusetts at center of the obverse while the reverse reads “THE COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS TO THE MEMBERS OF THE MASSACHUSETTS VOLUNTEER MILITIA WHO WERE MUSTERED INTO THE UNITED STATES SERVICE IN RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT LINCOLN’S FIRST CALL FOR TROOPS APRIL 15, 1861.”
Rim is stamped “DANIEL FLYE, PRVT. A. 8TH REG.
With the medal is a newspaper clipping discussing the issuing of the medal to the Flye family only three days after the papers were filed asking for the medal.
Daniel Flye was a 21 year old tinsmith living in Saugus when he enlisted as a private in Company A, 8th Massachusetts Infantry on April 15, 1861 for three months service. The regiment left for Washington almost immediately. Part of the regiment garrisoned Annapolis while the rest of it was sent to Fort Mc Henry in Baltimore, Maryland. The 8th was finally mustered in on April 30, 1861. On May 11 the 8th went into camp at Relay House, Maryland. While there Daniel Flye left to enlist as a private in Company k, 17th Massachusetts Volunteers for three years. He reenlisted on February 13, 1864 and was mustered out with Company C on June 11, 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina. While with the 17th he saw action at New Bern, Whitehall, Goldsboro, Blount’s Creek, Batchelder’s Creek, Plymouth and Wise Forks all in North Carolina. During its service the 17th lost 4 officers and 168 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease plus many others wounded. [ad] [ph:L]
