Small blue ribbon approx. 1.50 x 3.75 inches with a small strip of gold braid across the top.
At center is a gold wreath with a number “7” at center flanked by the letters “WV” over the dates “1861-65.” Above the wreath is “APRIL 9” and below it is “1885.”
Ribbon is in very nice condition with strong gold lettering.
The 7th West Virginia Infantry was organized in August 1861and served with the 5th and 2nd Corps of the Army of the Potomac. The regiment saw action at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Reams Station and Weldon Railroad.
The regiment is well-known for being part of the “Gibraltar Brigade” of the 2nd Corps which helped repulse the Confederate attack on East Cemetery Hill at Gettysburg on the evening of July 2, 1863.
During its service the regiment lost 13 officer’s and 287 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease plus many more wounded but survived. [AD]
