This is a cast representation of an Enfield musket with bayonet fixed. It has the proper rear sight and sling swivel on the top band. Meas. approx. 20.25 inches long. Musket is painted with a brown stock and silver on the lock, hammer and triggerguard as well as the barrel, nose cap, buttplate, lock screws, sight, bayonet and barrel bands. Butt of stock opposite lock has cast raised letters highlighted in silver against the brown stock that read “12th N.H. VOLS.” Nice condition with no chips or cracks. Even the sling is present.
Musket rests in a homemade wooden case painted red with a green felt covered wood base with a mortise to accept the musket. The back of the wood case is marked “POE 1969.”
The 12th New Hampshire was assigned to the 3rd Corps of the Army of the Potomac where it saw its first action at Fredericksburg.
The regiment suffered heavily at Chancellorsville on May 3, 1863 and at Gettysburg where the regiment defended the area around the Klingle farm along the Emmitsburg Road suffering 17 killed, 68 wounded, 3 captured and 18 missing.
In December of 1863 the 12th was transferred to the 18th Corps and saw action at Williamsburg, Swift Creek, Drewry’s Bluff, Fort Stevens, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. [AD]
