This black ribbon meas. approx. 2.50 inches wide x 6.00 inches long. The top bar of the ribbon is a stamped brass piece of scrollwork design with a central decoration printed on the ribbon of silver stars.

The body of the ribbon has “IN MEMORIAM” across the top with a GAR Membership badge done in silver ink below it. The bottom of the ribbon reads “COL. JAS. H. CHILDS, POST NO. 230, DEP’T PENNA.” This lettering is also done in silver. The bottom edge has a silver floral pattern.

The ribbon is in good condition with light fraying to one side and the bottom right corner. None of this is serious.

James H. Childs was from Pittsburgh and was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in the 12th Pennsylvania Infantry on April 21, 1861. After three months service he was mustered out in August of 1861.

Childs was next commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry on October 18, 1861 and was appointed Colonel the following March. He was killed in action on September 17, 1862 at Antietam.
