Badge is made out of stamped brass and meas. approx. 2.00 x 2.00 inches.
The design of the badge is a diamond shaped field with a raised cartridge box at center. The box is painted black with a plain brass oval “US” plate with “40 ROUNDS” above it in raised brass lettering. The field that the box sits on has been painted red to denote the 1st Division.
The item is in good used condition. The black paint has worn off the edges of the cartridge box and some of the red paint on the field has chipped. The whole surface of the face of the badge shows a very nice even patina. The reverse of the badge still has the original pin.
The 15th Army Corps served in the Army of the Tennessee. It was commanded by Sherman in the Siege of Vicksburg and then by Major General John A. Logan in Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. Brigadier General Peter J. Osterhaus commanded the Corps in the March to the Sea, but Logan was back in command during Sherman's Carolina Campaign. When General Howard became head of the Freedman's Bureau, Logan became the commander of the Army of the Tennessee for the final march to Washington. William Hazen then became the 15th Corps final commander.
