Smith patent shoulder straps used a gilt stamped brass border imitating the dead and bright bullion of embroidered shoulder straps, and were more robust, easier to maintain and less expensive, making them ideal for field-wear by officers of every rank. There were several efforts to improve upon the embroidered versions. This type was patented by military goods dealer James S. Smith of New York June 18, 1861, and became the most widely used alternative. The stamped gilt brass frame imitating the raised, embroidered borders uses pins mounted on the back to secure a backing with the appropriate branch of service color, on which might also be pinned false-embroidered rank insignia as appropriate. Needless to say, this avoided the snagging and pulling of bullion strands or the separate jaceron wire edging of the embroidered versions and also provided an easy way for an officer to show a promotion by just changing the rank insignia rather than having to buy a new set of straps. Smith also noted the borders were easy to keep clean and bright by simple polishing.

This set is for a brigadier general and uses a single, raised, false embroidered, five-pointed star on a black velvet ground on each, the regulation background color for general officers and staff officers of all branches of service, and the regulation rank insignia for a brigadier general. The backs are present and both faces and backs are free of moth damage.

These are in excellent condition and make an impressive display. These officers were not relegated to background positions, but held field commands, leading brigades, usually four or five regiments, under fire, with a commensurate mortality rate.
