A very nice condition pair of Civil War period Brigadier General’s shoulder straps showing signs of actually having been worn on a uniform. These measure 1-1/2” wide by 3-7/8” long and are regulation, with a single embroidered silver bullion star in the center of each on a black ground. The borders are a single row of embroidered gold bullion strands and are edged inside and out with gilt jaceron wire. The stars are raised, five-pointed, and embroidered with silver bullion thread.

Both the borders and the stars show nice color with minimal oxidation and no loose threads or snagged jaceron wire. The ground is an excellent deep black- regulation for general and staff officers. The reverse is covered in a polished cotton, light brown, showing rubbing and wear, but no holes. Each has a small, doubled-wire hook sewn to the corners on the back to engage wire loops sewn to the uniform coat shoulders, to keep them securely in place but permit easy removal for cleaning.

During the Civil War generals, particularly brigadier generals, were very much leading from the front, serving under fire, and often a prominent target, frequently serving mounted even when in the front lines. This is a very clean, attractive set for a general officer in strong condition with good color and merit a place in any collection of period bullion embroidered insignia.  [sr][ph:L]
