This unique military overcoat is of the post-Civil War Indian Wars period and features a unique pattern with New York State appointments.

The piece seems to be something of a hybrid between the m1858 overcoat and subsequent models such as the 1872 and beyond. Constructed of a blue to primarily grey wool satinette fabric characteristic of New York State Militia uniforms of the 1870’s and 1880’s and trimmed in black wool piping, most of the stitching was done by machine with some hand sewing along the edges of the cuffs and around several buttonholes in the form of minor repairs. The button holes are machine sewn/finished.  The folding collar is similar to a mounted services variation and is trimmed in black piping with two cuff-sized buttons that can fasten to make a secure standing collar. The body of the coat is in good condition, with only minor localized holing roughly halfway between the waist and edges of the tail. Seven cuff-sized New York State Excelsior buttons join the cape at the front, and each back is marked “EXTRA QUALITY” or stamped with Scoville markings. A seven-button front features six Waterbury Excelsior buttons, with a mixture of unmatching backs to include Waterbury and Scoville, with a nice general eagle button at the collar, stamped Horstman of Philadelphia. The right side of the coat features a watch pocket, while the left – a reinforced belt loop with black trim and a cuff-sized New York State button. The bottom edge of the coat is unhemmed and two scalloped black flash accents are affixed to the rear of the tails at the seams with three non-functional coat-sized New York State buttons.

A bold, red wool lining is fully attached along each of its edges, with some light holing in the lining near the right shoulder, very minor fabric pulling at the armpit, and hand repair work along one of the body seams. Each sleeve is lined in an off-white polished cotton and have seen some minor hand repair work with the left sleeve stamped “CHARLES CHRISDIE 294 BOWERY N.Y. CITY” and the right, a hand applied “W E”. A “14” is hand applied to the interior of the watch pocket and the same initials “W.E.” are just below it. Two folded linen fabric sections are sewn into the seams that adjoin the tail pieces, the right is stamped “20” while the left is stamped “52”.

Overall, a nice garment with strong New York credentials that tie it to post-Civil War state guard or militia service. [cm][ph:L]

SCARCE NEW MODEL 1865 SHARPS STILL IN PERCUSSION NEAR FACTORY NEW

There are no appreciable differences between the NM1863 and NM1865 Sharps other than the stamped model designation by the company, and its occasional absence, which some have speculated was due to worn out or broken old dies, or was a marketing ploy… (490-2531). Learn More »
