These remarkable and wonderfully crafted boots come complete with identifying characteristics, a scarce feature of period footwear.
Measuring approximately 16” tall, these boots are trimmed in red Moroccan leather, a detail offered on the most expensive and highest-quality boots of the time. All black leather is in great condition for its age with minimal crazing and complete, strong sticking throughout. The leather remains pliable but stiff. Leather pull loops are strongly attached and in excellent condition with no cracking or excessive drying.
The soles of the boots are in a wonderful condition best described as having seen service, but not enough to break down the integrity of the pieces. All wooden pegs are present with very minor drying and light cracking across the arches of each. All square nails in the heels are present with no heel plates or hobnails. Soles show evidence of scuffing, but these boots were either well-cared-for or seldom used. Length of sole measures just over 11” and the width measures just over 4” at the widest point.
Lettering along the red leather trim on the left boot reads “A M O(?) 2(?)” while the opposite boot reads “A M 61” in an elegant, hand painted, white cursive script.
Less a general issue item and more of a personal statement from a proud young serviceman or officer from the earliest period of the Civil War, this very scarce dated pair of boots would be a prime addition to any collection and would display beautifully. [cm][ph:L]
