These exceedingly rare but classic Civil War items come to us in a great condition with soles that tell a story of many miles traveled. The rich, black leather is lightly crazed and stiff but still pliable and shows not obvious signs of cracking. Stitching is strong throughout with only a minor separation of the first stitch on the body of the upper right seam of the left boot – the stitching and integrity are still very strong and would make a quick and easy repair for the restorationist.
Red Moroccan leather pull tabs are strongly hand stitched into the rear panel of the pipe of each boot, as typically seen among officer and privately purchased examples. One of the tabs – the left tab on the right boot – is broken but complete.
The soles of the boots are the most interesting feature to the humanist. The heel plates have been removed, but some of the steel nails remain in the heel of each. The arch of each boot is cracked from the wearer’s obvious stretching and straining, while the pads of each show countless miles of contact with rough marching and walking surfaces. This serviceman favored his left foot, as the sole of the left boot shows the most wear with signs of quick repair attempts noted. The sole is worn down to the next layer of pressed leather.
The wooden pegs are entirely present in the right boot sole but some are missing from the left. A layer of the sole appears to have been removed from the left boot, showing a notable height difference between the two. This may have been an alteration to accommodate wear to the boot sole, a shorter limb, an orthopedic issue, or injury. The heel is not uniformly worn, with more wear to the right half.
The extended tops of the boot are a nice detail popular among boots of the Civil War period, offering extra protection and a way to blouse or rest trousers above the pipe of the boot.
This pair of boots matches well-documented original Civil War footwear on exhibition as well as popular catalogues, collections, archives, and publications. The left boot measures 15” tall, with an 11” by 4” sole at the widest point. The right boot measures 16” tall, highlighting the height difference, with sole measurements identical to the other.
Original boots are becoming harder to find, particularly in such a nice condition with complimentary evidence of extensive use. Would be a superb addition to any Civil War collection and would display very nicely. [cm][ph:c/L]
