Standard issue dark blue wool shell jacket with red piping on collar and cuffs with red trim down the front and along the edges. Jacket has 12 General Service eagle buttons down the front with two buttons on each side of the collar and two at each functional cuff. All of the buttons appear to have no back marks. Corresponding button holes show no wear. Most, but not all, of the buttons appear to have been resewn.

The body of the jacket is in excellent condition. There are little signs of wear and no moth action of any kind can be detected. Back center has both pillows. The piping and trim retain their original bright red color with no loose stitching. All exterior seams are tight. Collar has one hook and eye closure.

Interior is lined with a gray wool material and features a wide-spaced quilt stitch going back and forth to hold the lining in place. A pocket is in the left breast. Sleeves are lined with white muslin. Right upper sleeve interior is stenciled with size, “2” and a nice, clear oval inspector’s mark, “F.H. SHAFER / U.S. INSP.” A third line is unreadable.

There is a very suspect identification in the collar. “R. JAMES” is loosely stitched in the lining.

This jacket is a fine example of a Civil War Artillery shell jacket.   [jet][ph:L]
