This New Jersey National Guard coat dates from the 1880s and has a full set of NJNG buttons with crossed rifles with NG above and NJ below: 9 large on the front, 6 large on the tails, 2 small on the shoulder tabs, 2 more on the collar, 2 on the belt loops, and 3 on each cuff. The coat loosely follows the US 1872 pattern and is dark blue with light blue shoulder tabs, cuff plackets, narrow scalloped plackets on the tails, narrow, pointed collar tabs, and blue piping around the collar, down the lapel, and on the belt loops. Crossed rifles came in as infantry insignia in 1875 and the branch of service color changed to white in the 1880s, so that is probably the period for adoption of the pattern, but states had their own regulations. This has a maker’s label in the collar reading  “W.D. Cowan / Newark, N.J.” and we find NJ Quartermaster purchases from that company in 1885, 1886 and 1890, though there were likely others.

The exterior of the coat is very good, with nice color, solid seams, no tears, etc. The only moth damage we see is two pencil point nips on the left skirt, about half way down the front, and not easy to spot. The body and sleeves are lined in white, with the chest quilted, and show some stains and mostly an off-white color, but no holes, and all seams are good. The interior of the collar shows a deal of wear and shredding, though only on the inside lining. The skirts are lined  in a loose weave fabric, now green in tone, that shows wear at natural points of contact- the hips and lower edge, with some holes on the wearer’s right, and bottom middle, but in the lining only, not the coat.

This is a nice, colorful New Jersey related piece that would look good with a cap and a set of  New Jersey marked accoutrements.  [sr][ph:L]
