This 5-button blouse has four coat size Civil War eagle buttons on the front and two smaller Civil War eagles on each cuff. The generous among us take this as a nice bonus; the cynical think someone may have been deceived about the date of the coat in the past. The top button is missing. The others are standard general service Civil War eagles. The coat follows the 1890 pattern of US fatigue blouse and is a commercial, private purchase, having a higher-grade black (silesia?) body lining. The sleeves are lined in white. All seams are tight and the color is good. The collar is a simple roll-over collar. The lapels are square at the bottom. There is a single pocket in the left breast. The left (inner) edge of the top facing of the pocket has torn from the lining, leaving a hole about 1 inch by ¼ inch behind it that could be mended to prevent tearing. Otherwise the lining is fine. On the exterior we see just two pencil point moth nips on the upper back and one on the underside of the collar in the back and we had to look a good deal to find them. The button holes show some use, but are not torn out. The coat shows a little dust from storage, otherwise rates near excellent. The small hanging tab inside the collar is still in place.
The army replaced the piped 1874 5-button blouse in 1883 with an untrimmed version retaining the single button on each cuff. These were dispensed with in 1884. After some experimentation with exterior pockets the army returned to the pattern with a single interior pocket in 1890, but with three small buttons on each cuff. This shows traces of the three cuff buttons on each sleeve - one set missing the upper button (leaving a very small hole) and the other the middle. Regulation issue enlisted blouses used a flannel lining. This coat could be for an officer or an enlisted man who simply wanted something of a little better quality. [sr][ph:L]
