Standard issue dark blue wool shell jacket with red piping on collar and cuffs with red trim down the front and along the edges. Jacket has 12 General Service eagle buttons down the front with two buttons on each side of the collar (one missing on right side) and two at each functional cuff. All of the buttons appear to have Scovill back marks. Corresponding button holes show no wear.
The body of the jacket is in overall excellent condition. There are no signs of wear or dirt and no moth action of any kind can be detected. Back center has both pillows. The piping and trim retain their original bright red color with no loose stitching. Most exterior seams remain tight. Collar has one hook, but missing the eye closure.
Interior is lined with a blue wool material and features a wide-spaced quilt stitch going back and forth to hold the lining in place. One small area of wear and separation around the inside right breast. A pocket is in the left breast. Sleeves are lined with white muslin. Right upper sleeve interior is stenciled with size, “4” and a nice oval inspector’s stencil.
This jacket is a very fine example of a Civil War Artillery shell jacket. [jet] [ph:L]
