This is a nice example of a Civil War U.S. officer’s frock coat for infantry.
The coat is the blue wool frock with nine-button front, three-button cuffs, and two buttons on each tail in the back. Embroidered captains shoulder straps.
The body is dark blue wool. The interior lining is quilted, polished green/brown cotton. The sleeves are lined with polished white cotton. Two pockets are in the tails and one in the left breast. The skirt lining is hemmed, while the blue wool exterior material is unhemmed. There is a single “hook & eye” remaining on the collar.
All buttons are present and are the correct eagle “I” buttons. All appear to be “Extra Quality” back marked.
The condition is overall very good. The exterior remains in nice condition other than scattered moth tracks and moth holes. The interior linings show some wear and several seams have separated. Inside of collar and armpits show the most wear and seam splitting.
This infantry captain’s coat remains very displayable. [jet] [ph:L]
