This coat is of the same pattern as that worn by Union infantry with the difference being the piping is red instead of blue.
Coat is single-breasted with a nine-button front and is made of a coarse blue wool. The exterior is in very clean condition and has held its color over the years. The coat does have four or five scattered moth bites. One on the upper left chest and two at the back waist and one at the bottom of the skirt, but these are very small and not readily noticeable.
The front of the coat displays very well. The red piping on the collar and cuffs has retained its color. Looking down from above, there is one small area of wear on the left edge of the collar but nothing to be concerned about. The nine buttons on the front are all general service eagle buttons. All look to be original to the coat and all have “SCOVILLE” back marks. Collar retains the hook and eye fastener at bottom with another on the lower front skirt.
There are two general service eagle buttons at the back waist just above the tails. Both buttons are SCOVILLE marked. Tails have interior pockets lined with brown polished cotton.
The sleeves are slightly billowed at the elbow and have functioning cuffs held closed by two buttons each. The right cuff has both general service eagle buttons marked “EXTRA QUALITY” while the left cuff has the same.
The lining on the interior of the coat is excellent. The lining is of black polished cotton in the chest and is lightly quilted. The tail is lined with very nice brown polished cotton. Sleeves are lined with white muslin and are excellent. There are no markings visible.
The coat is an excellent example of a Union enlisted man’s garment. The moth action is very limited and not intrusive and the exterior wool still retains strong colors. Coat will display spectacularly. [ad] [ph:L]
