Standard issue dark blue wool shell jacket with red piping on collar and cuffs and red trim down the front and along the edges.
Jacket has 11-button front with two buttons on each side of the collar. Back lower center has both pillows. Both cuffs are non-functioning. There are some signs of moth action on the collar and jacket body but these are minor and are more like tracking than holes. The piping and trim retain their original bright red color. All buttons are original and are General Service eagle buttons. Most have blank backs with the two on the right cuff being marked “SCOVILLE.” All exterior seams are tight. Collar has single hook and eye closure at base. Attached to each sleeve are red artillery sergeant’s chevrons. The chevrons on the left sleeve have a single moth hole on the bottom stripe. Those on the right sleeve have a moth hole on the second and third stripe while the first and second also show about an inch and a quarter of missing material. Inspection shows that the chevrons are original Civil War era pieces but were sewed on much later.
Interior is lined with a brown wool material and has a vertical pocket in the left breast. Sleeves are lined with white muslin. Lining seams are excellent. Right upper sleeve interior is stamped with “GOV’T MANUFACTUREING SKIRRITT, INSP’R ST. LOUIS, MO.” within a rectangle with a “4” in a circle over stamp. Markings are excellent.
Jacket is clean overall and is really a first-rate example of a Civil War Artillery shell jacket. [ad] [ph:L]
