The group consists of three pieces, visor hat, tunic and trousers.
Visor cap has a gray wool crown with several minor moth holes and a dark blue band around the base. The front of the crown has a brass wreath with silver “USWV” at center pinned to it. Working chinstrap is made of bullion cord while the visor is of patent leather with a green underside. Side buttons bear the crest of the United Spanish War Veterans. Interior has the complete leather sweatband with a black cotton lining in the crown. Present in the crown is a plastic makers label/sweat shield with a spread-winged eagle and “ROSENFIELD UNIFORM CO., 15 SCHOOL ST., BOSTON, MASS. EST. 1902.” Aside from the minor moth nips mentioned the cap is in overall nice condition.
Tunic is made of a dark blue wool with gold embroidered initials “U.S.W.V.” on the stand-up collar. Coat has yellow cloth epaulettes and four pockets with a finished slit in the left side to allow access to trouser pockets when the tunic is buttoned. All buttons are present, five down the front, three on each cuff, one on each pocket and one on each epaulette. All bear the United Spanish War Veterans crest. Exterior is free of any moth damage and is in excellent shape. Interior has a black cotton lining in excellent condition with a horizontal pocket in the right chest. Sleeves are lined with a bed ticking type of material while the center neck of the collar is lined with linen. Right armpit bears a worn maker’s mark that with effort could probably be made out. Lining is free of rips or tears.
The list piece is a pair of gray wool trousers with yellow leg stripes. Trousers have belt loops as well as suspender buttons. One suspender button at the right front is missing. Trousers have a button fly and a hook and eye type closure with an offset button flap on the inside. All buttons are present. Side pockets are vertical and run along the edge of the yellow leg stripe. Watch pocket is present. Back of the trousers have an adjustable yoke and suspender type buckle adjuster flanked by horizontal back pockets. Exterior body of the trousers have several minor scattered moth holes. Interior is lined with bed ticking material in the waist. Pocket linings a muslin.
Overall, the uniform is in excellent condition for its age exhibiting only minor moth nips as mentioned and even surface dirt from age and storage. There is no name in the tunic and trousers but the cap does have “A. L. ALDERMAN” on a piece of old white tape attached to the plastic crown label/sweat shield. [AD]
