The dark blue wool blouse is in excellent condition overall. The exterior has no moth damage of any kind and all the buttons are present. The blouse has a seven button front with two on each shoulder. The base of the collar has two hook and eye attachments. There are no exterior pockets and the epaulettes, front pleat, bottom edge and collar base are lined with red as are the three buttons on each non-functioning cuff. The interior is also in very nice condition. The body is lined with black cotton while the sleeves are lined with white muslin. In the collar is the tiny remains of a sewn in paper label. Left sleeve lining is stamped “6-S” and “QUARTERMASTER DEPARTMENT, U.S. MARINE CORPS, 1898-1899” in three lines. There is also a name stamped in this area but it is difficult to read as the center of the stamping has faded or rubbed off. The lining has two vertical pockets one of which contains the remains of the paper label from the neck.
Nice sky-blue wool trousers in matching excellent condition except for the signs of a removed leg stripe from each leg. Evidently these trousers once belonged to an NCO and when they passed to the next man he was a Private and did not rate the leg stripe. The trousers have no visible markings other than an old laundry tag. The trousers have a buttoned fly, two side pockets and one back pocket. The back has an adjustable yoke with japanned buckle. All suspender and fly buttons are present. Trousers button at the waist with a button sewn to the inside of the waistband.
Overall this is an outstanding set of dress blues from a period when the Marines began to make a name for themselves.
