This dark blue wool broadcloth cloak has a fold down collar, four Russian knot closure straps, two large vertical front pockets and is edged throughout with a ribbed black tape.
The sleeves are very roomy with ample cuffs. Each cuff has two rows of galoons indicating the rank of Captain. The fold down collar has two hook and eye attachments while down the front are ten Russian knots, five on each side. These knots start with cording in the shape of a flower with vertical cloth covered tabs at center. Extending out from the center are long loops of cord to wrap around the corresponding tab. Two of the tabs have broken off but are present in one of the pockets. The front side pockets are outlined in ribbed black tape that extends both above and below the pocket slit to form a tombeau reminiscent of a Zouave jacket. At the bottom of the back there is a vent with the same design and two cloth covered buttons for closing the vent. A third button has gone missing. The exterior is clean and in very nice condition.
The interior of the cloak is lined in sky blue wool that looks very much like sack coat material. The chest has slanted horizontal quilting and a horizontal pocket in each chest. The lining is in very nice shape with only one or two minor seam separations. No makers label or mark could be found. The cloak is long and would easily fall below the wearer’s knees.
