This is the regulation crimson silk net sash worn by all commissioned officers below the rank of general, regardless of branch of service with the exception of medical staff, who were permitted green sashes. (Along with a couple of rare intrusions from state or militia specifications.) This is in very good condition, full length (to permit it to wrap twice around the body, tied at the left side and hanging down from there, in theory no more than 18-inches,) and retaining its end knots and tassels (the knot formed over a wood “mould” and showing Turk’s head weaving pattern.) This is in very good condition, showing just a couple of very small holes and none of the runs, bigger holes, loss or fabric or shredding that these often show. The color is very good, somewhat muted by age and oxidation from crimson to a maroon shade as almost all are, and many likely were quickly in field use by exposure to the elements and sun. This shows just minor soiling and some rubbing to the tassels from movement along the officer’s left leg.
This is a key uniform item that is necessary in any officer’s display or to accompany an officer’s sword. These saw everyday use, and were a badge of rank, distinguishing a commissioned officer from company first sergeants and members of the noncommissioned staff by the color and material, and also marking an officer’s post by wear over the shoulder rather than around the waist when serving as officer of the day.
