Presented here is an original Civil War officer’s crimson silk sash in very good condition. Worn by Federal officers in most of the branches of the United States Army, the waist sash was a common uniform accoutrement that signified a symbol of authority in the military during both field operations and camp duty. The sash, when worn over the frock coat, was wrapped twice around the waist and looped on the left side. The officer’s leather sword belt was worn over the sash. This specimen still exhibits a rich, vibrant crimson color and consists of a 4” wide by 94” long length of woven silk terminated at each end with single, 1½” long ‘braided acorns’. Each of the acorns display several 7” long, twisted silk tassels secured along each acorn brim. Tassels retain their original crimson color with some scattered faded areas. Acorns are tight and strong with light fading and few dark spots. Silk sash body is in great condition with a strong tight weave. No holes or tears are evident on the sash but it does show one small pulled thread. No fraying. Original Civil War silk crimson sashes are becoming difficult to find in the collecting field today. A fine piece at a reasonable price.
