Shako is made with a black felt body with a leather crown and base.
The black felt body is in very nice condition. Color has faded a bit from black to black with a greenish tint. The leather crown has some light crazing and signs of wax paper or a label having been stuck to it at one time. Removing the paper or label has left some residue behind. The bottom of the leather crown is outlined by a single band of gold bullion tape. Extending up from the crown is a pom-pom of sky-blue over white fur. Attached to the front of the body is a stamped brass shield topped by a five-pointed star. Half of the shield has a US flag while the other half has a chevron, point up, with two walking birds above and one beneath. At bottom of the shield is a riband that reads “MONSTRAT VIAM” or “SHOW THE WAY.” Around the base of the body is a black leather band outlined with a single row of gold bullion tape. Shako has large State of Massachusetts side buttons and a complete leather chinstrap with buckle. Visor is leather with a bound edge that shows one small chip and some light surface crazing. The underside of the visor is lined with green leather.
Interior has a complete 2.00 inch wide black leather sweatband with no lining in the body. In the crown is a wonderful paper label that reads “BENT & BUSH MANUFACTURERS AND DEALERS IN MILITARY AND ??? GOODS AND SOCIETY REGALIA, 387 WASHINGTON ST, BOSTON.” Part of the label cannot be read due to gum residue from a removed label.
Bent & Bush are a well-known maker of military items. They were located at the 387 Washington St address from 1877 to 10902.
Shako really displays well and has a very nice look. [ad][ph:L]
