Shako has a high pasteboard body covered in dark blue wool at the top with a band of black wool around the base of the crown.
The shako body stands 7.25 inches high with a disk in the crown that meas. approx. 5.75 inches across. The upper body is covered in a very fine quality dark blue wool with a welt around the disk. The dark blue material ends with two parallel welts which come to a point at front center. The bottom section of the body is covered in an equally fine black wool felt.
Leather chinstrap is anchored by two original staff officer’s eagle buttons. Strap has adjustable chinstrap with small brass buckle and tongue. “Duck bill” type leather visor is firmly attached and has a sewn edge. The underside of the visor is green.
Sewn to the front of the shako are ALL ORIGINAL PERIOD bullion insignia. First is a black felt oval outlined in dead bullion with a wreath at center made of both bright and dead bullion with a “US” at center made of the same. On the front of the crown is an embroidered 1851 hat eagle done on a black felt backing. The eagle faces left with a riband in its beak and is surmounted by stars and a sunburst all done in gold bullion thread. At the very top of the crown is a large gold bullion pompom in the shape of an acorn. This is affixed by sliding the brass stem on the base of the acorn into a pocket sewed to the front of the cap. All fits perfectly and all insignia are in excellent condition.
Interior is lined with a black polished cotton that is quilted in the crown. Black leather sweatband is correct in that it meas. 3.00 inches in width.
Size is approx. 7.75 to 8.
This is a well-made reproduction shako with original museum quality insignia. [ad] [ph:L]
