Indian Scouts were active in the American West in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Including those who accompanied General John J. Pershing in 1916 on his expedition to Mexico in pursuit of Pancho Villa. Indian Scouts were officially deactivated in 1947 when the last Native American member retired from the Army at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.
This helmet has been reconstructed using original parts. All of the insignia is original, to include the red and white plume, plume holder, Indian Scout side buttons, and eagle plate with the crossed arrows device. The scarce leather chin strap and dangling cords are not present.
The “helmet” itself is made of black felt with patent leather binding and sweat band. Visors are lined in very thin leather. There are no labels or markings visible on the interior.
The helmet body is full form with a few small cracks at the edge. The edge binding has several cracks and there is a 6” portion missing. The visor lining shows some cracking and loss. The sweat band remains in very good condition.
Indian Scout Dress Helmets are uncommon, and even this one reconstructed of original pieces, will represent and display well in your collection. [jet] [ph:L]
