In appearance this hat looks very similar to the Model 1898 campaign hat in color and shape. The color of the felt and the hat band around the base of the crown are correct. The hat is made of sturdy pressed felt and is lacking the stitching on the brim edge and the snowflake pattern vent holes on the side which are found on the issue versions.
The crown is creased and the front is adorned with the brass crossed rifle insignia and the number “2” denoting the 2nd US Infantry. Insignia has been bent to conform to the shape of the crown.
The right side of the hatband at the base of the crown has a United Spanish War Veterans lapel button attached.
Interior has no lining but does have the original leather sweatband that meas. approx. 1.50 inches wide. The band shows moderate wear but is complete.
The exterior of the hat shows numerous scattered moth tracks and several scattered small holes. The right side of the crown has a small break that has been repaired with an old piece of index card glued to the inside. The left front edge of the brim has a small crack that has been repaired with old tape underneath.
Despite these drawbacks the hat really has a nice “been there” look to it and is a more affordable way to fill out a Spanish-American War display as the Army issue version of this piece of headgear is quite expensive. [ad] [ph:L]
