The body of this kepi is made of red wool with a dark blue or black crown and band around the base. The exterior wool surface has light dirt from age and storage.
As one looks at the kepi from the front, the right side has a small repaired moth hole while the back has a small moth hole along the rear seam and a nip just below the crown on one side. The kepi is decorated with gold bullion thread on the front seam with a single diagonal strand on each side. The same gold thread is used to highlight the top edge of the 1.00 inch high dark band that runs around the base of the kepi. This gold thread is worn down in some areas and missing in others but these imperfections are small. The dark wool disc of the crown is in very nice condition and is also outlined with gold bullion thread.
Attached to the front of the kepi is a false embroidered stamped brass infantry hunting horn insignia with a small white metal false embroidered “H” at center.
The visor of the kepi has an unbound edge with rounded corners and is still firmly attached. The surface of the visor shows some crazing. The leather chinstrap is complete with keeper and buckle and is anchored by two New York State shield buttons. One has come loose but is held to the kepi by the chinstrap.
The interior of the kepi has a light brown, leather, sweatband approx. 1.75 inches high and is completely intact. Some of the thread holding the sweatband looks to be repaired.
The lining of the cap is completely gone.
The item displays very well and is really an attractive piece. [ad]
