Shako exhibits the 1861 pattern gilt plaited, brass die stamped insignia of the Union shield with the letter “M” mounted within a false embroidered stamped brass infantry horn. The shield is surrounded by a brass half-wreath. Also present at top, just below the crown, is a plain domed brass rosette button mounted over a red leather scalloped backing.
The body of this shako is composed of a heavy weight pressed blue wool felt that has faded to a brownish/green hue. The body is fitted with a 5 ½” diameter molded leather crown and a 1 ¼”patent leather band at the base. The chin strap and keepers are present and are held by two small cuff size 1850’s Marine Corps buttons. Also, just below the leather crown on each side are two horizontally placed half-moon shaped vents. The leather visor is edge bound and has a patent leather coating. Front edge shows some light wear. Present at top front of the crown is the red ball shaped pom-pom.
The shako’s internal features consist of the entirely intact sweat band composed of a series of multi-finger type leather tabs of a thinly glazed coated leather with scored linear design. The draw string is missing causing some of the fingers to curl. The manufactures label located on the underside of the crown is present but damaged by insects. It reads:
“FROM BENT & BUSH’S MILITARY ESTABLISHMENT, COR. OF COURT AND WASHINGTON STS. BOSTON.” Insect damage is mostly confined to the center of the label however it is still readable.
The size is 7 1/8”
Excellent example of a rare Civil War USMC item. [ad]
