The body of this item is made from a dark blue almost black wool material. It is finely woven and very thin. The entire base of the kepi is stiffened with a strip of pasteboard that is sewn in place under the sweatband. The kepi also has a low front and a long sloping back that is reinforced with a strip of leather sewn between the lining and the body. The disc is recessed.
There are two General Service Eagle buttons anchoring a thin leather chin strap that still retains its brass keeper and leather slider. The visor is firm and has a bound edge.
There are four slits cut in the front where an insignia may have been at one time. The right side of the kepi has a 4.00 inch long stress separation just below the disc exposing the pasteboard body of the disc. The left rear has another stress split that is 2.75 inches long just above the top edge of the pasteboard rim that runs around the base. There is some light crazing on the visor and on the left side the is a 2.75 inch section where the binding has gone missing.
The interior of the cap is missing the sweatband but all of the brown polished cotton lining is present. The lining is gathered at the top leaving a small opening at the center. There are some minor stress separations but otherwise all the lining appears to be present.
