Beautiful, near mint condition Model 1881 cavalry dress helmet. This example is composed of a dark blue-black wool cloth pressed over a cork inner body shell. The helmet is trimmed out with a 1” decorative leather band and ¼” visor edging. All brass hardware is present: Federal spread eagle plate superimposed over a set of crossed sabers, oak leaf designed crown base with plume socket shaft, crossed saber side buttons, plus two split rings and small brass decorated bases. The original yellow branch of service, horsehair plume is in superb condition for its age. The current wool helmet cord is a reproduction. Internally, the 2” sweat band is totally intact and complete. As to size, it looks to be ether a 6 ¾ or 7. The manufactures name of HORSTMANN BROS PHILADELPHIA is stamped in raised lettering on the brass ventilator ring inside the top of crown. One minor defect should be noted, the front eagle plate is missing one of its back wire attachment loops, so the plate sits at an angle. Excellent condition specimen to add to your advanced Indian War period collection.
