Swallow tailed guidon made of half red and half blue cotton cloth. It meas. approx. 20.00 inches on the hoist and 29.50 inches on the fly. Colors have faded a bit from exposure to the sun. This is visible more on the red fabric than on the blue.

At top center of each side is a 3rd Infantry Division insignia done in blue and white thread. Insignia meas. approx. 6.00 x 6.00 inches. Colors on the insignia ae good. About 6.00 inches below the Division insignia is a number “2” done in white thread. This meas. approx. 2.00 inches x 2.25 inches. Thread is good.

The fly end of the guidon has a sleeve for attaching to a staff.

Cloth is strong and in good condition.

The US 3rd Infantry Division, also known as “The Rock of the Marne Division” was organized in 1917 and served in France during World War One. They were instrumental in stopping the German drive on Paris in 1918 along the Marne River thus earning their nickname. They saw action in the Champaign-Marne, Aisne-Marne, St Mihiel and the Muse-Argonne Campaigns.

During World War Two the Division fought in the Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Anzio, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe Campaigns. The most decorated soldier of World War Two, Audie L. Murphy, served in its ranks.

The Division also served in Korea losing 2,160 killed in action and 7,939 wounded.

During the Gulf War, from which this guidon dates, the Division saw action at Medina Ridge located southwest of Basra, Iraq.

The Division continues to serve today in the Global War on Terror in Iraq and Afghanistan.  [ad][ph:jet]
