Original Civil War patent “Eyelet Hook”. Patented in 1862 by Abel Putnam. Non-dug example of this unusual button/hook. Typical brass enlistedman’s “eagle button” face. Tin back with iron wire spring hook. Faintly stamped in tin back, “PAT  NOV  11  1862.”

Used to close overcoats, ponchos, and tent flaps.  Examples of these have been excavated from Civil War sites. An interesting and unusual “button” for your collection.   [jet][PH:L]
