This seaman’s duffel bag, measuring about 23’ by 12 ½” when laid flat, was intended for personal clothing, etc., and has been personalized with a stenciled American eagle with outstretched wings over a large “U S N” in Old English that has a looping scroll over and around it that appears to be in the form of a twisted rope, with the sailor’s initials and last name above and below the “USN.” The stencil shows rubbing, but the sailor’s name appears to be “A. Sandforth,” clearer at the bottom, though with what seems to be a rubbed middle initial, and at the top showing mainly the last name. The bag is heavy linen canvas, made with an inner lining as well, undyed and now a tan or light brown, with some darker brown stains and a few holes on the circular bottom panel, likely from later storage, that do not go through the inner lining, and a couple of tears that were mended during its active service life. The upper edge has whipped grommets for a closing/carrying rope. We have not identified the sailor yet, so we might be misreading the name slightly, but the stencil is dead-real and the bag is nice example of US navy seaman’s duffel bag. This was formerly in the navy portion of the collections of the Texas Civil War museum and would make a nice background piece for a US Navy display. [sr] [ph:L]
