These trousers are made of fine royal-blue broadcloth wool. The waistband has five brass and one bone suspender button. The main button for holding the trousers closed at the waist is missing. The fly has a four-button closure arrangement. All four buttons are present, one is brass and the rest are bone. Back of the waistband has a “V” shaped yoke with a size adjustment strap and small japanned buckle. Strap is lined on the back with white cotton. On the right front, at the waist, there is a watchpocket, however its lining is gone. The side pockets are button-down “mule ear” pockets. Buttons to anchor the pocket flaps are no longer present. Pocket linings are worn but complete. There are no back pockets which is correct for the period.

The inside of the waistband is lined with white muslin that has browned with age. Lining is handsewn in place. Pocket linings are also made of white muslin but are badly worn and darkened with age and use. The rest of the trousers are unlined. Both legs have a 2.50-inch-wide strip of linen along the bottom inside of each cuff. Running along the outside seam of both legs is narrow piping done in dark blue denoting an officer of infantry.

The overall condition of the trousers is good. All seams are tight. There are a number of small scattered moth holes in the seat, crotch and numerous areas on the leg strip where the white cording is showing through the dark blue wool covering. There are a few nips on the legs but these are very minor. Moth tracking is visible in the seat area as wells as several small stains. The cuff of the left leg shows heavy wear.

Civil War trousers are rare in any condition and these, despite some moth action, will display well.  [ad] [ph:L]
