Here is a pair of shoulder scales for Sergeants of the Civil War era. These devices were worn on the 1858 pattern dress coat (9-button enlisted frock).
This rank was distinguished by the full crescent (top and bottom). Each scale is complete with the attachment bar on the underside. The scales measure approximately 7” long x 2 1/8” on the strap and 4 ¼” across the crescent.
These scales were attached to the uniform by passing the attachment bar under a small strap sewn to the coat and locked by a small brass turn-buckle sewn to the coat at the collar. A very nice pair of original sergeant’s shoulder scales. [jet] [ph:L]
