These buff cloth epaulettes are in very good condition with only light surface dirt from age and storage throughout. There is no damage of any kind. The body of each is covered in a buff colored cloth with a clamshell that is highlighted by two concentric rows of twisted material, the outer larger and thicker than the inner. Twisted wool buff tassels with a sewn together bottom edge hang from the clamshell. The undersides of each epaulette are padded and lined with white muslin. Under each clamshell the lining is faintly stamped “W. H. HORSTMANN & SONS…” in black ink. On one epaulette the mark is within a rectangle and on the other the mark is in an arc shape. Each epaulette has a sewn buttonhole for attaching to a uniform jacket. Buff epaulettes were used by men serving on staff or they could also have seen service with militia units. [AD]
