Canteen is complete except for the spout. Both halves are still firmly in place. All three of the sling keepers are present and complete. Both sides are pushed in. Item is heavily rusted throughout. One side has three holes. One is about the size of a dime while the other two are smaller. There are four smaller holes at center that were done by the tip of a triangular bayonet. Old typed paper label comes with the canteen reads “CONFEDERATE CANTEEN PIERCED BY BAYONET FOUND ON WILDERNESS BATTLEFIELD, VIRGINIA, MAY 1961. BATTLE OF 5 MAY.” The digger who wrote the tag either made a mistake by calling this a Confederate canteen or he may have dug it within the Confederate lines and thus labeled it Confederate. It is definitely a Union made Model 1858 smooth side canteen and is priced accordingly.
