Pair of complete original cartridges with ink inscriptions written on them. One is a standard .58 cartridge with “July 1861 Battlefield of Bull Run” and “Taken from a cartridge box” written on the side. Paper wrapper is weak but in good condition. The other is a .58 cartridge made with the bullet exposed. There is a little paper loss and if disturbed powder will leak out. There is writing on the cartridge that appears to read “Newport News.” With both cartridges comes the original paper wrapper they were both stored in. Written in period ink on the wrapper is “Cartridges from Bull Run battlefield & Newport News, Virginia. 1861.” With the items is a printed label stating what is written on the cartridges and that they were found among the effects of a 14th New Hampshire soldier that were broken up and sold separately.
