This Federal cartridge box plate is of the regulation 1839 pattern and was recovered from a 6th Corps camp at Brandy Station, Virginia in February 1959. Plate is in very fine excavated condition. Constructed in the die-struck and rolled brass method, the oval brass accoutrement’s face has a central “US”. Face is very well preserved and has acquired a handsome smooth, brown patina. The lead filled back retains 100% of lead fill and is perfectly smooth. Both iron hooks are lightly rusted but strong and present.
Recovered by Sid Kerksis and comes with the envelope he stored the relic in. Envelope marked, “Brandy Sta / Feb 59 / CBP / 6th A C camp”. Mr. Sydney C. Kerksis was a legendary early Civil War relic hunter and the author of “Plates and Buckles of the American Military 1795-1874”.
This highly pleasing, original brass U.S. cartridge box plate would be fine addition to any Civil War collection. [jet] [ph:L]
